How did it all start?
Humble Beginnings
OPA! has defied expectations since co-founders Niko Tiginagas & Don Gebauer shelled out their first plate of calamari in Calgary’s Market Mall in 1998. In the 20 years and 95 stores that have opened since then, OPA! has stayed true to the hallmarks of the Mediterranean diet by using whole food ingredients, prepared simply at their height of freshness. That recipe for success isn’t about to change as OPA! marks its 20th anniversary this year. If anything, it’s something worth celebrating as much now as it was in 1998, when burger joints ruled the quick-serve food market. Fast Food choices weren’t all that healthy 20 years ago and we were well positioned at that time as one of the first in that area and that really propelled us.
OPA’s menu items were a huge hit with customers and OPA! attracted those who were in search for meals with lean meats and proteins and fresh vegetables. After the initial years of success, OPA! started to expand to other locations, both in storefronts and malls. Customers couldn’t get enough of our Mediterranean flavours and there were constantly lines of hungry customers with a craving for our tasty Greek recipes.
By 2003, OPA had expanded to a number of locations in Alberta and British Columbia. Development continued through the next decade and we introduced ourselves into Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. We are now serving our freshly prepared menu items in over 90 locations across Canada and what started as a dream, slowly became a reality thanks to hard work and perseverance from our hard working franchisees and the love from our customers!
